I am 32 years old and was first diagnosed with cervical dysplasia at age 20. I went through the cryosurgery and did well with negative Pap smears until I was 25. I had an annual Pap that was positive…I also found out I was pregnant at that time. It was a risk to continue my pregnancy with dysplasia, but everything was fine. After I delivered my son, I had a LEEP procedure and had Pap smears every three months for a year; luckily they were all negative.

I had a second child 2 years later without any complications. Six months ago, I began having abnormal bleeding and discharge, especially when I would ovulate. I would be embarrassed to even be intimate. Again, I went through the biopsy and ultrasounds. I decided to proceed with a D+C and hysteroscopy to find out what was going on. I have been diagnosed with a high-grade lesion consistent with moderate to severe dysplasia as well as having endometrial hyperplasia and uterine polyps removed. I thought to myself, “I’m only 32 and really healthy, what is going on?!”.

I am now facing having another procedure, a Leep, just weeks after having a D+C. I guess the way I’m looking at it is that I am grateful that I have been diagnosed with dysplasia and not cervical cancer. I have 4 and 6 year olds at home and am divorced. Boy this is a wake up call!
