Dealing with HPV-Cervical Dysplasia

I was married to a man that smoked pretty moderately for four years, but we were sexually active not using any protection for five years. When I was 23 years old after a routine pap smear, I found out that I had the HPV virus and was referred out to specialists. The first one I saw did a biopsy by clipping chucks of my cervix out do study them further. He told me that I did have cervical dysplasia and suggested that I get the cryo done. This is where they actually freeze your cervix to kill the abnormal cells in hopes that normal ones will grow back.

After the healing process I started seeing a new specialist (due to insurance reasons), after my first pap with her she told me that it was still abnormal. I went to her office to get treated again and found out that it was her mistake and that I was HPV free and my cells were normal!!! A week and a half ago, I go to get my last pap before I could go back to the normal once a year. I go in the office a week later to get an IUD inserted and my doc breaks the news that the HPV came back and so did the cervical dysplasia

Of course I’m extremely upset about it. I’m 24 years old with two little boys and I’d rather just get a hysterectomy so I don’t have to deal with this anymore. It seems so many people in my family are getting cancer, and I don’t want to be one of them. My cousin died from breast cancer my mother is a cancer survivor, my grandmother died from lung cancer and my grandfather is currently dying from cancer that is spread throughout his body. Seeing my mom go through chemo radiation, and physical therapy….no thanks I’ll pass on all of that. I refuse to let this get the best of me and I plan and WILL be around to raise my children (who are 2 and 4)and see my great grandchildren one day.

  • Does it every really go away? - by Rebekah - (Wed, Oct 29 2008)
2 months before my wedding I received a call from my gyn, regarding by papsmear. It came back abnormal and i would need to go back for more test. They found that I had mild displaysis [dysplasia], and had a coloscopy. This was 3 years ago, I have since been fine until this month. I was informed that it has returned and would need to go through treatment again. I’m 26 years old and don’t understand why I’ve gone through this twice. This time around its been a lot harder for me. I’m angry that I have to go through this again. I’ll i can think about is that I’m to young to have these problems. I’m the type of person who always sees the bad before the good and can’t help but wonder how this will affect me going forward. Its comforting knowing that others have gone through this and are fine now. [more..]
