My story of DUB

Just over two weeks ago I was admitted hospital here in Aberdeen, Scotland with severe heavy vaginal bleeding. It started 5 days after my usual period. I was bleeding very heavily and passing very large clots. I was given 3 internal examinations while I was in hospitla for four days, a CT Scan, an ultrasound and two internal scans. Nothing was found in these tests and everything looked normal. Obviously I had blood taken many times. My hemoglobin on the first night dropped to 73, I blacked out and had to have a blood transfusion of two units of blood, the second night my hemoglobin was 76 and again I was given another two units of blood though blood transfusion. They tried to stop the bleeding with tranexmic acid and a hormone tablet which began with “p” (sorry I can’t remember the exact name).

I bled heavily and without a break from 2am Tuesday morning till Thursday noon.

There was no chance that I could of been pregnant as I am a lesbian and have never had sex with a man. I’ve also been anaemic for years mostly due to Bulimia.

I started my period when I was 10 years old, there was a very short time when i was 12 that I had very heavy periods, was in extreme pain and had to take days off school, but that tapered off. Other times where I’ve had problems with my period was when I was on an anti psychotic known as amisulpride, this made my period practically stop for a couple of years. I was taken off this medication as it wasn’t actually prescribed for psychosis it was prescribed as a trial really for people who self harmed like me. It didn’t help. Although I was diagnosed with bulimia and my weight fell to under 96lbs I never completely stopped my period at that time. Last year I relapsed back into bulimia and my periods were a bit irregular and my menstral cyle changed in October. Since then its been regular, nothing too painful or too heavy, I would say quite an average flow.

I’ve been referred to a benign gynecologist I haven’t had my first appointment yet, but they said before I got discharged from hospital that they would like to put me under anaesthetic, take me to theatre (OR) and have a proper look inside.

I was put on microgyn (the combined pill) I’ve been on it for two weeks and I’ve stopped it without medical permission. It was effecting my moods, messing with my weight and I hated it, I wasn’t happy being on it anyway (I wouldn’t recommend that anyone come off a medication without medical permission). I was also given some tranexamic acid away with me.

I still don’t know the cause of why I DUB, and it was a very scary experince due to the amount of blood I lost and the internal exams were very traumatic. Anyway I guess I’m at the beggining of all this and don’t have a clue whats going on.
