Living Comfortably with Vaginal Prolapse

by: Barbarajs on Mon, Oct 15 2007

I have been reading the recent letters on this site and felt I just had to respond. I am 60 years old with a bladder prolapse for the last 2 years. I will have surgery next year~~insurance problems, of course! I just wanted everyone with this problem to know that my doctor recommended an old-fashioned “appliance” for me. It’s called a “Pessary”.

They have been around for many years and they still make them. I researched them online and decided to go with the one my doctor recommended. There are many designs. Some allow sexual intercourse. It is a rubber device (similar to a diaphram) that is simply pushed up into the vagina to hold the bladder up.

THIS HAS SAVED MY LIFE! I go in every few months for my doctor to clean the pessary. You can even remove it, clean it and re-insert it yourself! You won’t believe the difference a pessary can make. I no longer have that “heavy” feeling~~in fact, I even FORGET it is in there.

My daughter is a labor/delivery nurse. I mentioned to her that some people stated they should have had Cesarean births rather than vaginal because of these problems. She said it’s actually the carrying of the baby for 9 months that causes this condition. A pessary is the temporary answer for me.

Hope this information is helpful.

I have only just discovered I have a uterine and bowel prolapse and am absolutely devastated. My symptoms started about 3 weeks ago but I assume I have had this problem longer but it has gone unnoticed. I have gone from no symptoms to symptoms all the time and over the last week have been having trouble having BM’s something of which has never been a problem before. [more..]

I was recently diagnosed as having a grade 2 uterine prolapse with cystocele (bladder hernia). I went to a new gyn and she found it, asked me a couple of questions, and told me to do Kegels After the appointment, I had such cramping and pain and pain in my bladder, feeling like I had to urinate all of the time, and it was much worse with sitting, which I do all day at my job. They wouldn’t call me back about my discomfort, so I finally found a urogynecologist to go see. [more..]

I am a 42 year old woman and have had a bulge in my vagina for about 2 years. I see a nurse practioner, who told me that I had a 1st degree prolapse, but never told me what to do about it. She said that it basically happens to all women because of the way that we’re built and the force of gravity. [more..]
